The “don’t break the chain”-technique is fantastic if you want to stick to doing something regularly. And it can even work if you do not do it actively like for me this time.
As a small recap, every time you do your thing, whatever it is, you get a streak for that time interval, and slowly, you’ll build a chain of those streaks. Now, the only goal is to not break the chain, or you have to start counting from 0 again.
Today, I was surprised that this does even work when I do not do the technique at all.
It was time to send this email for today, and rumbled on a few topics in my head during the last few days, but haven’t written any of them and kept prolonging it.
Till today, where I did not even feel like writing at all.
But suddenly, there was this tiny little pull.
The pull to write the email.
To not “waste my efforts” of continued writing.
I’ve been keeping the weekly schedule for some months now. With one failed email on a Sunday that I then sent a day later.
And with those thoughts, the tiny pull got stronger.
So strong that I turned on the computer and now write this email.
And at the same time, it became an eye-opener that this technique works even when I don’t do it actively and consciously.
Fantastic.
Maybe it’s pulling you too. Give it a go next time.
