What they want you to see

Framing is probably the most used manipulation technique in everyday life.

Everybody comes across it multiple times a day.

Every time someone wants you to perceive something in a specific, intentional way, there’s framing involved.

That ranges from ads, product packaging in the store, to news, media presentation, and politicians.

Simply put, whatever you want to show a third party, you show it through a frame, so they don’t perceive the full picture and only what you want.

It can be through words, like labeling a yogurt “80% fat-free” rather than “20% fat” to change perception from “negative” to “positive”. (Example)

Or visually by picking a specific angle to show you something, like in this example, and instigate in a particular direction.

Or audible, of course, where you only hear what you need to hear. Didn’t find an example though.

The thing is, this technique can be used for good and for evil.

However, you should spot that in any case, so you can intervene and make your own decisions.

Whatever you see in the ads, shops, media, etc., you can be sure folks were working on how they want you to perceive it and what they want you to do afterward.

And the more negative it is for you, the more work they’ll put into it.

You can often spot/counter it by zooming out or thinking about what they’re not showing you or what the opposite of the focus they put would be, such as fat-free vs. fat yogurt.

Followed by looking where the money goes and who’ll benefit from it.

Spoiler, it’s not you or me :-)

Now, happy spotting.
