“At this point, I’m desperate. I will try just about anything,” as Daniel said is the start of regretting it later and maybe even ending up worse than before.
Yeah, it can also become an awesome story that you’d love to tell your grandchildren. But frankly, the chances for that are pretty slim.
So, we’d better avoid those.
I mentioned it before but making decisions while feeling desperate will make things worse. First thing you have to do is to calm down and get a clear mind. Only with a calm mind you can see the whole picture and make better decisions.
Your emotions shouldn’t be in the driver’s seat in such situations.
In the case of Daniel, it had some nasty consequences.
See, he fell into the trap of unethical company behavior and ended up with more debt and having to spin his wheels to stay alive. You can read the full story on medium.
I’ll focus on the parts that lead to a desperate decision as it’s a great reminder to avoid desperate decisions.
Basically, the rates he got paid dropped, he was looking for alternatives during a worldwide crisis, got an offer from the same company, and neglected to get advice on a shady contract.
Now he’s stuck in that contract, has 40k of debts towards that company, and keeps spinning the wheel full-time to stay afloat. Leaving him with fewer options to make his living than before. Because getting out of that contract is expensive.
And all that because of that moment where his desperation took control over and signed that contract.
Did he have other options?
We don’t know as the article doesn’t tell but I assume yes. Probably plenty. We often don’t see those all because we are too focused on the problem.
And desperation makes us overlook even more.
Like taking a family photo with a microscope and wondering why you can’t see any people or so. Had a hard time coming up with an analogy. But hopefully, you get the gist.
So, please teach your mind to calm down to get in a state for making better decisions before you do anything. Especially if it involves you signing a contract.
