What you don't want is the key

Had you asked me a couple of years ago about what I want in my life and to do with my life, I couldn’t give you an answer.

On the other side, if you’d asked me what I don’t want, I could have given you an almost endless list of things that I don’t want, like, etc.

And then I wasted years in finding out what I want with no success. You know this finding passion, your dreams, and however you wanna call it BS.

But answers were actually a lot closer than I thought.

And the only thing I had to do is answer a question for each damn thing on my “I don’t want to / I don’t like” list.

Voila, the answers came and life got clearer.

I was almost there all the time. Just a little step was missing.

And this little step is asking yourself what is the opposite of your item on your “I don’t want to / I don’t like” list.

Things like “I don’t want stupid meetings”, “I hate to have someone approve my vacations”, “I hate someone telling how I should do my work”, “having to be in an office even after work is done because you have to be there for X hours a day” and a lot more like those.

After turning each into a positive opposite aka what I want, they formed into a bigger thing.

Autonomy.

I wanted a high degree of autonomy. Deciding what I do, how I do it and when I do, and where I do it.

Now there was a thing I wanted and a goal, an everlasting goal. A goal, once reached needs to be maintained. It’s not a one-time shot.

But it can be.

Because we change all the time.

But that’s a topic for another time.

If you struggle with finding out what you want for whatever part of your life. Start with the “I don’t want / I hate” list and turn each item into a positive opposite statement.
