Like deleting yourself

Recently, I found a comment nailing my “preaching” of “don’t tie your self-identity to external stuff:

“They can’t. They formed their personality over it. If they stop talking about politics it is like “deleting” themselves.”

The topic is irrelevant, and so is the mention of politics. It applies to all stuff.

If you tie your self-identity or personality, as the comment said, to it and it is criticized or otherwise challenged, you’ll suffer.

At the same time, you won’t stop talking or preaching about it.

Imagine you tied your self-identity to your favorite donuts, you’ll start preaching about those, and when people tell you to shut the f up, etc, your little donut inside will feel worthless.

And if you don’t fight back and talk more about the donut, it feels like you’re getting deleted.

Think about it.
