Mindful eating is not a diet

“ugh, not another diet. What the hell can’t I eat now” is a common reaction when people hear the first time about mindful eating.

But mindful eating is not a diet. It is not about what kind of food you eat. Nor about counting calories or all the other restrictions.

And it doesn’t collide with your diet of choice at all.

Why?

Because mindful eating is about why, when, and how we eat.

It’s about detecting if we are really hungry or if it is pseudo hunger caused by the outside or our emotional state.

Let me pull that cookie picture again to show my point.

Mindful eating does NOT forbid you to eat this cookie. Instead, it reminds you to check before taking a bite if you’re truly hungry.

See, I am not hungry at all but as soon as I see this cookie, I’d like to have one.

But thanks to practicing mindful eating I know it’s not the hunger type where I shall eat. And I can deal with it accordingly by not eating the cookie and moving on.

The first thing to learn about mindful eating is that there are 7 types of hunger. And with only 2 of them, we shall eat.

Can you guess which two?

  1. Eye hunger
  2. Nose Hunger
  3. Stomach Hunger
  4. Mind hunger
  5. Cellular hunger
  6. Mouth hunger
  7. Hear hunger
