Sometimes you have to take a step back to move forward

And sometimes it’s not just one step back but maybe two or three or even more.

But those steps are necessary to give you room to breathe and think. Looking at the whole scenery and not just through a focus lens.

And suddenly things become much clearer and you find yourself closer to your goals than before.

However, stepping back is not always easy-peasy as falling on the couch and chilling around.

Sometimes it involves tons of work, frustrations, and doubts. It feels painful.

But once you are through, your life gets sunnier and you realize it was still a good decision :-)

I did take such a step back with one of my projects this week.

You might know that I run a software named FeedLetter. It’s providing the little feedback widget below.

And without getting technical, I made some early decisions that brought the project to the current success. But they already prevented me from moving forward with certain things.

So, I made the decision to fix that and started on Monday. Of course, with a totally unrealistic assumption of how long it will take.

And we all know how this will go.

Half the time was over and I still was early on, fighting with different issues and such my stress level rose and rose. Anxiety and doubts crept in.

Until I realized that all was self-made stress by my totally off expectations. Yay!

Fortunately, practicing mindfulness helped me to realize and accept it soon. And since that, the rest went smoothly, although it took me twice as long to finish it.

Now that’s over, I am happy and eager to add the new features.

So, think about what you pursue right now and if maybe a step back is necessary for you to make any progress.

And if you need some outside perspective, feel free to chat with me. Happy to help.
